Michael Franti has announced his partnership with Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity dedicated to providing free shoes to people in need around the world. In an effort to collect/sponsor 100,000 pairs of shoes, the campaign will serve to raise awareness of the need for footwear both nationally and internationally in order to enhance the lives of families worldwide through a cooperative effort to distribute critically needed footwear.

In addition, nine cities along Franti's "The Sound of Sunshine Tour" including the Club Nokia show on 9/22, are designated as part of The "Barefoot Concert Series" where fans can donate/sponsor shoes and learn more about the programs at Soles4Souls. Fans will also be able to donate funds via text message by texting keyword "FRANTI" to 20222 or via www.michaelfranti.com and www.soles4souls.org. Local distributions, as well as additional promotions (including impromptu "busking" performances by Franti), will be held in select cities throughout his tour.

The two will partner to raise money through the charity's "$1 equals 1 pair" program. For every dollar that is raised, Soles4Souls will donate a pair of shoes to someone in need. The partnership is especially significant for 2010, as it marks anniversaries for both Soles4Souls (the distribution of its 10 millionth pair of shoes) and for Franti, who decided to go shoeless 10 years ago.

A musician, poet, social humanitarian and activist, Franti is recognized as a pioneering force in branding music as a vehicle for global social activism. In 2000, while traveling the globe, Franti saw unfathomable poverty, which amongst other things, had children and adults walking barefoot.

Upon his return to his home in San Francisco, Franti decided to give up shoes for three days to learn what it would be like to be constantly barefoot, and his trial period turned into a 10-year campaign. He can only be seen wearing flip-flops when boarding a plane or in a restaurant.

"Ten years ago I made a decision to go barefoot after playing music for kids in many countries who could not afford shoes," said Franti. "I know some of the aches and pains that go along with being barefoot, but have no idea what it's like to not be able to afford them. Partnering with Soles4Souls is a way of putting my experience to use helping families take a first step out of the cycle of poverty."

"We're honored that Michael is joining with us to give shoes to people in need," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "It's not everyday that you have such a dynamic artist willing to take time out of their busy schedule to become personally engaged in our mission, and we are delighted to be a part of it," he said.

Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people around the world. The shoes are distributed, free of charge, to people in need across the globe. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently distributing one pair every 7 seconds). The shoes have been distributed in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal, and the United States. Soles4Souls is a 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS and donating parties are eligible for tax advantages.

Returning for the second year in a row, The OohLaLA Festival is bringing its French chic flair to venues around Los Angeles September 30-October 2. Following the success of the inaugural three-day music fest this year's installment will span various locations across the city including Club Nokia, the El Rey, as well as Spaceland. Once again, the event will be presented/executive produced by Goldenvoice and presented by KCRW.

Distinguished for bridging the gap between continents while highlighting emerging talent, OohLaLA curates its acts to span genres and selects artists who embrace France's rich musical history and simultaneously reflect fresh sounds. With that notion, there's no better example than Gotan Project, whose unequalled Tango-infused electronica will be featured at Club Nokia Saturday, October 2. The trio is currently supporting their most recent Tango 3.0 release, adding to their already impressive discography that surpasses millions in album sales. Joining them on night three of the Festival will be General Elektriks, the brainchild of Herve "RV" Salters, a French national with a penchant for vintage keyboards. The now Berkeley, Calif. based-Parisian is well embedded with the Quannum crew and churns out an intoxicating mix of future soul, indie rock, old-school hip-hop and free jazz. The evening will be well rounded with El Hijo de la Cumbia, who pay distinct homage to the classic cumbia sound yet masterfully inject Columbian rhythms, hip-hop and dancehall beats, and dub experiments. The outpouring of international flavors will surely keep the dance floor busy.

4Troops--four former soldiers who have joined forces to honor American veterans and support our servicemen through song--will be performing at LA Live's CLUB NOKIA on Wednesday, October 6. Their stirring album, 4TROOPS, is a collection of covers from "You Raise Me Up" to "Bless the Broken Road" sung with choral enthusiasm and a full backing band.

4Troops--four combat veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan-- consists of United States combat veterans Sergeant Daniel Jens, who was a 2008 finalist on "America's Got Talent;" retired Staff Sergeant Ron Henry, Sergeant David Clemo and Captain Meredith Melcher, the daughter of a retired three-star General. The quartet join vocal forces on a self-titled debut with patriotic and inspiration songs. This past January, 4Troops signed with Sony Music, their album was produced by Grammy-winner Frank Fillipetti, who has worked with Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Elton John, Billy Joel and many others. A portion of the proceeds from 4Troops' album will benefit the USO, American Legion, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, and Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America. The first single released from the album is "For Freedom." Tune into "4TROOPS: Live From the Intrepid" broadcast on PBS stations currently airing. In this moving performance shot on the aircraft carrier Intrepid, 4TROOPS perform songs off their new album including "For Freedom," "Bless the Broken Road," and "Courtesy of the Red White & Blue."

"Our hope and goal is to do this as long as America wants us," adds Ron Henry. "We love America. We love all the troops and all the servicemen and women. We just want to do something that will give them encouragement to keep going."
